As Toyota continues to find its mojo, two new versions are lined-up

Toyota is a carmaker that Iain Robertson admires greatly, as much for its stoical approach to car manufacturing, as its uncanny agility for one of the largest single manufacturers in the world, and its latest Corolla is proving a point, or two.

Barely is the paint dry on the latest Corolla model, being built at the UK’s Burnaston plant, near Derby, and Toyota introduces a couple of important model diversions worthy of note. The first is a Corolla GR Sport, which is imbued with the spirit of Toyota Gazoo Racing and further develops the model’s dynamic appearance and enhanced driving capabilities. It is the second model to join the European GR Sport line-up, following the introduction of the Yaris GR Sport last year, details of which you can find in our archive.

Both Hatchback and Touring Sports versions will be available, with a choice of 1.8 or 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid powertrains. The Toyota Gazoo Racing influence is witnessed in distinctive styling elements, including a new front grille, with a dark chrome finish, lower skirts and sills and a rear diffuser. The GR Sport has dedicated 18.0-inch diameter machined-finish alloy wheels, plus rear privacy glass, front fog lights, LED headlamps and an exclusive Dynamic Grey bi-tone paint finish.

The cabin features sports seats in black cloth upholstery, with leather-effect bolsters; full-leather upholstery can be specified as an option. Black and red stitching adds a striking contrast on the instrument panel, steering wheel and the shift lever. The Corolla GR Sport will go on sale in Europe in January 2020. Details of UK availability and specifications will be announced soon.

The alternative newcomer is the Corolla Trek, which gives the Touring Sports model more rugged, crossover styling, designed to appeal to lovers of outdoor pursuits. It is the result of a new collaboration between Toyota and Trek Bicycles; two brands that share similar environmental values and offer complementary mobility solutions.

Founded in 1976, Trek Bicycle is one of the world’s most popular cycle brands, selling around 1.5m bikes a year. As well as manufacturing high-performance cycling equipment, Trek also uses the bicycle as a way of helping to break down barriers that prevent people from living happier, healthier and more active lives. Toyota has signed an agreement with Trek to provide the Corolla Trek as support vehicles for the men’s and women’s teams competing in European events in the Trek-owned Trek-Segafredo World Tour.

The Corolla Trek will be offered with the 1.8, or 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid powertrains. It benefits from a 20mm increase in ride height and features front and rear protective underruns, 17.0-inch diameter machined alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, front fog lights and LED headlights. Inside the car is a 7.0-inch TFT infotainment screen, two-tone cloth upholstery and matching wood trim details. We receive the new model in August, which coincides with school holidays. Strange that!

MSG Summary

We love the way that Toyota has been redefining its market presence, keeping a wary eye on environmental developments, while boosting its sporting credentials. It bodes well for the brand’s future and is immensely customer-pleasing.
